We know what it is like. The worst happens. Whether it is your parents, your spouse, or maybe even your grandparents, something has prompted the search for a “home.” It’s been gradual, happening over time, we may have been in denial, but we knew it was coming. Maybe it was the last fall at 2 am on a Saturday, but something has prompted you to start looking. Now there are all of these terms that are confusing at best, and at worst seems like you are dumping your person into an institution. At Indalo Homes, the founders, Ivan and Lesley have been there. We have sat on the other side of the table and searched for our family members and done the caregiving ourselves. We have studied it, lived it, and now we are making it better. But let’s start with some of the basic terms, what they mean, and if they are right for you.
What is assisted living? What is a six-bed? What is a board and care facility? And what are Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly?
Indalo Homes is all of these.
As defined by the California Department of Aging, “assisted living” is used to describe a variety of facilities that provide both housing and personal care. Those that serve residents ages 60 and above are called RCFEs or Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly. They include "board and care homes," which are often six-bed facilities in residential homes as well as much larger facilities.
A six-bed board and care home offers several benefits for both its residents and their families:
Homelike Atmosphere: Many residents prefer the homelike atmosphere of smaller facilities. Living in a residential neighborhood rather than an institutional setting can help residents feel more comfortable and at ease and create an intimate and inclusive community with other residents and caregivers, promoting socialization and overall emotional well-being.
Higher Staff-to-Resident Ratio: Compared to larger facilities, six-bed board and care facilities typically have a higher staff-to-resident ratio. This means residents receive more personalized attention, assistance, and supervision, leading to better overall care and safety.
Flexibility and Independence: Despite receiving necessary assistance and supervision, residents in smaller facilities often have more autonomy and independence. Indalo Homes designs their care plans to accommodate individual preferences and abilities, allowing residents to maintain a higher level of freedom and dignity.
